The Enhancing Treatment Utility in Instructional Consultation Problem Solving is a research project designed to learn more about how to help children who have reading problems. In this study, we are interested in serving first through third graders enrolled in schools in southwestern Wisconsin. To participate in the study, both teachers and parents must consent. This study is evaluating different methods for helping teachers develop plans for student's displaying reading problems at school.

In the first method, a consultant works with a teacher to identify the reading problem, assess the learning environment, and develop a reading program for the child. In the second method, a traditional assessment method (i.e., the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Ability and Tests of Achievement) is administered to help identify the student's thinking skills.

Recommendations for a reading program are based on results from these tests. In the third condition, after identifying the reading problem, a treatment is recommended based on information in an Intervention Manual. The reading programs are continually monitored to evaluate the student's progress in reading.

"I found the project extremely helpful. Never, in education, are best practices in teaching reading made so explicit. The whole experience was a wonderful self development tool for me."
- Kris Gallagher, Teacher, Madison, Wisconsin

"The program was immensely helpful to me and my student. It gave me specific information about the root of their reading problems, specific interventions, and ideas to share with his parents about helping at home¡¦. The research record keeping was also very helpful to me, and took very little time to manage. Great program!"
- Jackie Bacher, Teacher, Madison, Wisconsin.
